Hello! I’m Jen, and Uprising Bakehouse is my gluten-free, plant-based microbakery specializing in sprouted sourdough.
My business started in 2018 as 33Kitchens, a small woman-owned home-based business in Burlington, Ontario, Canada. My original goal was to help people lead healthier lives by providing convenient, delicious, plant-based food options for home delivery and catered events, sort of an introduction to vegan food for non-vegans. But as the business grew, a more specific goal came to light….
A few months after opening, I developed papulopustular rosacea (the kind that looks like acne). It was so frustrating for me because I’d already made the switch to a plant-based and gluten-free diet to help alleviate symptoms of IBS and asthma (which it did). I was eating organic, gluten-free, taking high-quality supplements, exercising daily, and even meditating! I felt like I was doing everything right; how could I have developed another health condition? Well, in a word, stress. I was new to business ownership and plant-based cooking, plus I was going through some struggles in my personal life. Fortunately, with the help of a naturopath, I was able to heal most of the rosacea, but it would still get triggered any time I would have the smallest amount of processed food.
One of those processed foods was store-bought gluten-free bread. So being an avid baker, I set out to learn how to make a clean gluten-free sourdough bread that was easy to digest and delicious. I took courses, made my own sourdough starters, researched recipes and practiced. I’ve never eaten so much bread in my life as I did over the winter of 2019-2020 because I finally had access to bread that didn’t trigger any of my health issues! And by February 2020, something amazing happened: my asthma disappeared! Thirty years of medication-dependent asthma healed! The only significant change? I was eating my home-baked sourdough bread almost daily for months. I’d love to say it’s because my sourdough is magic, but I think it has more to do with the healing benefits of natural probiotics, specifically those that live in foods.
Now I want to share those healing benefits with as many people as possible! Most common health issues can be alleviated or resolved by simple diet changes, and Uprising Bakehouse wants to help by supplying a clean allergen-friendly version of everyone’s favourite food group: bread. In addition to providing fantastic tasting bread with health benefits, Uprising Bakehouse’s goal is to help educate, empower, and inspire others to explore the healing benefits of probiotic-rich food and a plant-based gluten-free diet.
